The geology of the Sierra Nevada began millions of years ago when an ocean covered the area known as the Sierra Nevada. Beneath the ocean, geological changes to the seafloor lead to the formation of the Sierra Nevada through the processes of plate tectonics, the movement of the plates that form the earth’s crust.
