COURT ORDERS CLOSURE OF STATE PARK – IGNORES COLLABORATIVE PROCESS

LIVERMORE, CA (December 15) — In a recent court action, a judge in Alameda County has ordered a closure of one of California’s State Parks. Last week, Judge Frank Roesch ordered the closure of Carnegie State Vehicle Recreation Area (SVRA) based on his own interpretation of the appropriate application of water quality standards.

You may ask yourself what can I do to help stop this frivolous lawsuit?

Here’s your opportunity to join together with SNA members this Saturday December 26, 2009 and be part of the first grass roots gathering at Carnegie (SVRA) to protest and “RIDE” before it’s too late.

Extreme Environmentalist; is someone who cares only about their own personal concerns about the environment and is opposed to everyone’s views if they differ from their personal agenda and is unwilling to discuss solutions.

Outdoors Enthusiasts; is someone who loves and cares for the outdoors and is concerned about the environment and is open to solutions to protect, explore and maintain our public lands for all who seek adventure.

Carnegie State Vehicular Recreation Area (SVRA) is located in the hills of southern Alameda and San Joaquin counties, Carnegie is one of six SVRAs administered by the California Department of Parks and Recreation. With a diversity of terrain ranging from rolling hills, challeging canyons, motocross track to extreme hills climbs.

Carnegie has become a popular destination for off-road enthusiasts of all skill levels. Like many areas in Northern California, Carnegie’s unique past can be traced to the Gold Rush when miners, traveling through Corral Hollow Canyon on their way to the gold fields, discovered that the canyon contained a rich deposit of clay. Fueled by California’s rapid population growth and the subsequent demand for building materials, the Carnegie Brick and Pottery Company was formed. By the turn of the 20th century a vibrant town with over 2,000 inhabitants was in place and the town’s brick factory was producing upwards of 100,000 bricks per day! However, by 1916 the brick company was facing financial ruin and was sold. The new owners, in an effort to return the area to ranch land, sold off the factory’s equipment and destroyed what remained of the town’s buildings. The historic Carnigie Brick and Pottery Company is now a memory but today the extreme hills climbs at Carnegie are world famous to the motorcycle enthusiast.

I can’t wait for this ride. I’ve never been to Carnegie, so this is bitter sweet for me. Looking forward to a great day of riding new territory and grinning ear to ear while I explore this land that has been put here for all of us to enjoy while we’re alive and kicking. The group behind this closure continues to “sue first” and is not interested in an open dialogue with the off-road community. It’s unfortunate that this is the dim reality of our beloved sport. Ride/Race as much as you can, speak up, get involved. This is a tough fight for sure.

Also, I hope anyone who can make it will be there, but if you can’t make it the BRC is putting on a rally Dec. 28th too. Contact: brdon@sharetrails.org for details.

  • Hey Guys,
The Carnegie ride was a blast – challenging, rocky ditches and some awesome hill climbs…perfect traction. Thanks to all that showed up. By the way, not really a sponsored ride, this was more of a Treadstone Cycles & Sierra Nevada Adventures wake-up call to take land & motorcycle state park closures seriously. This may have possibly been our chance to ride Carnegie SRV Park for the last time ever – that is a tragedy.

If Carnegie opens again soon, we will hold an actual Treadstone Cycles / SNA-sponsored ride with a BBQ. On the other hand, if it doesn’t open soon, we are planning to hold a protest ride at Prairie City with possible local media and other bike shops in attendance. Prairie City or Frank Raines or Hollister may be the next targets! Let’s all do what we can to stop the lunacy.

To close this area will be a tragedy, Families have been enjoying these hills for generations. I learned how to ride here at carnegie some twenty years ago and now my young nephew rides here this like everything else in this state of ours I am sure comes down to money. This sucks
