The Yosemite Wilderness began millions of years ago when the Sierra Nevada Region was beneath an ancient sea with layers of sediment, which eventually folded and twisted and thrust above sea level. Simultaneously molten rock welled up deep within the earth and cooled slowly beneath the layers of sediment to form the largest continues block of granite in the world. Erosion gradually wore away almost all the overlying rock and exposed the granite. During the ice-age massive glaciers carved and sculpted the Sierra granite into Natures Masterpiece, creating pristine meadows filled with wildflowers, sculpted granite peaks with panoramic views and some of the worlds tallest and most spectacular waterfalls to be seen for those who seek wilderness adventure while exploring The Crown Jewel of the Sierra Nevada.
