Iron Butt Ride

IRON BUTT RIDE 1,000+ Miles in One-Day

If you’re addicted to motorcycles, like a challenge, and strive to push yourself further, then the Iron Butt Ride is the two-wheel ADVENTURE you’ve been looking for.

Motorcycling combines the excitement of the outdoors, travel and adventure, and there's no better way to get closer to the road, to the journey, than on two wheels. Cars are comfy, but in a car trip you often hear, "are we there yet?" On a motorcycle ride, the entire journey is the "adventure."

Yes, there's a big danger factor with motorcycles compared to cars, there are no seatbelts, airbags, or crumple zones on a motorcycle. You're exposed to the elements, rain, snow, wind, heat, cold, flying debris, bugs… oh the bugs. If you’ve ever taken a large bug to the face at a high speed you know what I’m talking about. But that's part of the adventure. It's what makes it part of the challenge.

The Iron Butt Ride is an extreme long-distance ride that will test your skills, endurance, and mental toughness. There are several factors that go into planning an Iron Butt Ride from the gas stops, lunch stop to the best route, etc. The typical Iron Butt Ride that most people choose is the longest, straightest highway route possible and avoids curvy mountain roads to maximize their chances of completing their goal. Well… with that said, this is not your typical Iron Butt Ride. This is a Sierra Nevada Adventures Iron Butt Ride and no SNA ride would be complete without a curvy mountain road and some off-road adventure. Yes, that’s correct. This SNA Iron Butt Ride will include a curvy mountain road in the northern Sierra Nevada to a ten-mile stretch of off-road through the scenic Alabama Hills located at the base of Mt Whitney (14,505 ft.) the tallest mountain in California as well as the highest summit in the contiguous United States.

If you’re still reading… You’re most likely a motorcycle enthusiast that understands the danger and thrills that can only be experienced on a motorcycle. You most likely have spent countless hours and thousands of miles riding and exploring on your motorcycle, from street bike rides to off-road adventures.

Now, you’re ready to take on the next big adventure, the Iron Butt Association's SaddleSore 1,000 challenge. Riding 1,000 miles within 24 hours. Most people, even other motorcycle enthusiasts would think you’re crazy, but most people have lost that thrill of a daring adventure!

ROUTE DETAILS:

First of all, I’m happy to see you’re still reading. That means you’re a hard-core motorcycle enthusiast or simply crazy, or a little of both. Well... whichever it is, here’s the route details.

This challenging and unique Iron Butt Ride (1,000+ Miles in One-Day) will begin on the western edge of the foothills and encompass the entire Sierra Nevada range. From Folsom, your ride will head north through the Sacramento Valley to Oroville. From Oroville, you will venture east on a curvy mountain road through the scenic Feather River Canyon located near the northernmost boundary of the Sierra Nevada. From the east side of the canyon, you will travel southeast through the great Sierra Valley then over Beckwourth Pass to Reno. The pass was discovered in the spring of 1850 by James Beckwourth an African American pioneer, mountain man, fur trader, and scout.

From Reno, your long journey continues south along the east side of the Sierra Nevada to Topaz. From Topaz you will continue south on the Eastern Sierra Scenic byway which provides breathtaking views of the Sawtooth Range to the wide-open expanse of the great Mono Basin. As you continue riding south the road descends as the mountains rise higher and higher along the magnificent eastern escarpment.

Your off-road adventure begins near the south end of Owens Valley as you veer off the tarmac and into the wild and scenic landscape known as the Alabama Hills. The Alabama Hills are a small range of ancient rock formations near the base of Mt Whitney. If you’ve never seen the Alabama Hills in person, you most likely have at least seen them in a movie or commercial. The Alabama Hills' strange and unique rock formations have been the location for more than 400 movies and hundreds of television episodes. For example, if you’ve ever watched the classic Clint Eastwood movie, Joe Kidd, then you’ve seen the Alabama Hills including Lone Pine Peak and Mt Whitney in the background. After exploring off-road through the Alabama Hills your long adventure continues to the southern tip of the Sierra Nevada range. From the southern tip, your ride veers north and travels through the San Joaquin Valley, and eventually returns to Folsom.
